Unfortunately for the city, Kraken was psychically manipulated by the Sisters of Death and ended up freeing the Dark Judges from Limbo leading to the events of Necropolis. Chief Judge Silver, desperate not to face the morale blow that losing Dredd would cause to the Department, ordered a news blackout on Dredd's departure and faked Kraken's death offering him a deal: take Dredd's place and have the death sentence commuted. This left Kraken facing his original death sentence at the same time as Judge Dredd announced his resignation from the Justice Department. Kraken excelled and was seemingly ready to take to the streets when Judge Dredd failed him on his Rookie Assesment. Recognising Dredd's increasing age, Chief Judge Silver offered Kraken membership in the Academy in return for commuting his death sentence.

In 2109 Judd launched an attack on Mega city One that was thwarted by Judge Dredd, during which Kraken was captured. Kraken: A clone of Judge Fargo created by the insane Morton Judd as part of his Judda clan. At this point Dredd confirmed to her that they had, indeed, been friends. After battling an alien who claimed to be Satan, Anderson was badly injured. Later Dredd denied his friendship with her and claimed that he had merely tolerated her.

This friendship came to an end when Anderson abandoned the law for a short time. Judge Anderson: For years Dredd had a close but uneasy friendship with Cassandra Anderson of Psi Division. Judge Rico eventually inherited Dredd's apartment at Rowdy Yates Block. One such clone, who adopted Rico's name (but as a surname), is often mistaken for Dredd. Judge Rico: Dredd himself has been cloned.
